I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Crockpot!
The crockpot pictured here is from Williams- Sonoma. A beauty isn’t it?!
Schools in session! This year ALL three kiddos are at the same school on the same schedule for the very FIRST time. I have done my duty for the past 8 ½ years and am adapting well to my new schedule thanks to my crock pot!
In years past I have been home in the afternoon to make a quick stop at the grocery store and do some food prep for dinner. Not this year, so I started off on the wrong foot on the first week of school, but this week I got myself organized over the weekend and so far have come home to some wonderful family dinners waiting for us all to dig in.
What’s for dinner? (The first question I get when I pick up the kids from school.) Tonight: Low Fat Turkey Chili with Corn Muffins. All I needed to do when I walked in the door was mix up a batch of corn muffins.
Low Fat Turkey Chili
Night Before Prep:
- Brown 1 lb. pound of ground turkey with one onion and a glove of garlic chopped up. Cool and refrigerate until morning.
- Mix the bowl of seasonings:
- 2 Tablespoons of chili powder
- ½ Tablespoon of ground cumin
- ½ Tablespoon garlic powder
- ½ to 1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes. (We love spicy food so we add a little extra.)
In the Morning:
- Coat the inside of the crock pot with cooking spray.
- Put in the ground turkey and onion that you browned the night before.
- Open your cans and start dumping them in: depending on your family and what you like you can change this based on your families tastes. I used:
- 1 can of tomato soup
- 2 15 oz cans of red kidney beans
- 1 15 oz can of black beans
- 1 15 oz can of diced tomatoes
- 1 15 oz can of diced tomatoes with green chilies
- A little pepper and salt and I throw in a pinch of allspice.
4. Pour in your blend of spices, stir. Set the crockpot low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours.
Enjoy that wonderful smell when you walk in the door….Jordan opened the door and said…“It smells so good…….what is it?” Stress free night enjoyed by all.
Please share some links and recipes for the slow cooker…..we would love to try some new ones this winter!

Amanda that sounds yummy. I wonder if I could make it without beans, neither of my boys will eat them! I so need good crock pot recipes. I will be checking in for more:0
I manly use the crock pot for spaghetti sauce, chili and soups, but Sandra lee on Food network uses it a lot.. even for desserts. So I finally bought a crock pot cookbook at a flea market for a mere buck. Lots of great recipes! I want to try making rice pudding sometimes and even fruit crisp. Sandra makes nice moist cakes in them too!
