{travel} California Lovin’

Editor’s Note: Leslie and her family were very lucky to escape Upstate’s winter weather, -20 degrees a few days ago, for the sunnier, warmer climate of Los Angeles, CA. She will be rubbing our faces in it reporting from the West Coast during her one-month stay.-Christina

So, here I am on the West coast, living it up in Los Angeles…I have so much to say about all the food, I don’t even know where to start! I am absolutely blown away by the sheer number of restaurants within a tenth of a mile of our house. I can eat tacos, french crepes, Greek food, amazing baked goods, sushi, Chinese, vegan, pizza, fresh squeezed fruit and vegetable juice, Thai, by stepping out the door and walking for five minutes. This is how life should be!!

As if that’s not enough, a 20-minute walk brings us to the famous Farmer’s Market at 3rd and Fairfax, which has been there since 1934. It’s basically a huge, open-air grocery store; there is produce, butchers, deli’s, restaurants, candy shops, and stores…we haven’t left there yet without some sort of edible treat in-hand.

On our way through yesterday, this asparagus caught my eye.

It’s hard to tell from the photo, but the stalks were beautiful; very slender and so fresh…I typically don’t love asparagus, but I couldn’t resist this and headed home to figure out how to prepare it! I stuck with the simple-is-best theory, and just roasted it with a drizzle of olive oil, and some sea salt and pepper. About 20-25 minutes at 400° later, we had the most delicious vegetable I haven’t had in months (I’m so over root vegetables right now!).

Now, I’m off to enjoy my brownie from the bakery down the block…mmm….
